Residents and traders in Ross-on-Wye are advised that a town-centre road will be closed for up to eight weeks from early September to allow a new culvert for Rudhall Brook to be constructed.
A section of the old brick-built culvert, which runs from the Fiveways below a length of Greytree Road, is in very poor condition and needs to be replaced.
The culvert takes flood water from the Rudhall and Chatterley brooks through the town and is crucial in protecting the town from flooding.
Preparatory work starts on Monday, August 23, and Greytree Road is expected to be closed from Monday, September 6, for up to eight weeks while work is underway.
Stephen Oates, Head of Highways and Transportation, said: “We appreciate that there will be a certain amount of disruption to residents and traders in the town but we will try to keep this to a minimum.
“The Culvert is an important defence for flooding and the maintenance is vital to protecting the town so we ask people patient while the work is underway.“
The work involves removing the original culvert and installing 35 rectangular precast concrete sections from the open brook behind the swimming pool along the length of the road up to the entrance to Fonteine Court and the junction with Nursery Road.
A large pipe laid along the pavement in Greytree Road will act as a temporary diversion for the culvert during its reconstruction.
The large concrete pre-cast units will begin arriving from Monday, September 6.
Vehicular access will be maintained to all properties though there may be short periods when access is temporarily restricted. Diversion routes will be signed.
The footpath along the brook behind the swimming pool will be diverted during the works.
