The first turf was cut today (Friday, August 6) on the main construction contract for the £4.5 million scheme to improve Hereford’s Roman Road between Tillington Road and Stretton Sugwas.
The proposed scheme will upgrade 2.3km (1.5 miles) of road to provide a standard 7.3m wide carriageway with verges and an unsegregated footway/cycleway which will link the outskirts of Hereford City to Stretton Sugwas.
Cllr Mike Wilson, Cabinet Member, Highways and Transportation, said: “It’s many years since Hereford has seen a road improvement scheme of this scale.
“The Roman Road is an important link for Hereford and this scheme demonstrates our commitment to improving travelling conditions in the City.
“The scheme will significantly improve the safety of road users in the area and includes special provision for buses, cyclists and pedestrians.
“After five years of planning and preparation, the start of work on the main construction contract marks the most significant milestone of the project, which remains on target for completion in Spring 2005.
“Recognition must go the local ward member, Cllr Bob Matthews, who has been the driving force behind this long running project leading the campaign and enlisting the support of the previous MP, Peter Temple-Morris, to obtain much of the required funding.
Cllr Bob Matthews, Member for Credenhill, added: “After much campaigning to get this scheme underway I’m delighted to see the work finally starting.
“The improvements will be of great benefit to the County generally and in particular residents of Stretton Sugwas and other adjoining properties.
Cllr Wilson added: “Stretton Sugwas village will benefit from the heavy traffic on the A480 being moved away from the village centre and the local primary school.
“The western end of the A4103, Roman Road, is at long last to be brought up to an A-class road standard from being a narrow, in parts single track, lane that regularly flooded and was very difficult to maintain.
“The road is a key link from the west of the city to the A49 north and other routes to the east. The new section will make a great deal of difference to local motorists.”

Stephen Oates, Head of Highways and Transportation said: " Over the coming months we will continue to keep local community in touch with progress on the scheme and to address any concerns that may still be outstanding about the impact of the work on residents or road users."
Construction is being carried out by contractors Alun Griffiths, under supervision by Herefordshire Council’s consultants Owen Williams.
The improvement will provide a safe and convenient link from the A480 Hereford – Lyonshall road at Stretton Sugwas to the eastern sections of A4103 Roman Road in Hereford.
At the western end, the A480 will be moved away from Stretton Sugwas village and the existing skew bridge and bends will be removed.
A new roundabout will be built at the junction of the realigned A480 with the improved Roman Road.
Extensive investigations have been carried out during the design process to ensure that the impact on the local environment is minimised and the design incorporates specific proposals to address concerns over both environmental and archaeological issues.
