Works were due to have been completed at the end of November but, despite contractors working weekday evenings and weekends, it will now be necessary for the final section to be completed in January, allowing the street to be free of works during the Christmas shopping period.
Works will now start again on Monday, January 4, to complete the final section up to the Bowling Green public house. This should take three weeks to complete and will be finished before the planned refurbishment scheme at Widemarsh Street starts.
Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “I would like to thank all of the traders and residents of Bewell Street for their patience and co-operation during these essential works.
“Unfortunately, the scheme has been delayed due to extremely heavy rainfall throughout the month of November but we will be working hard to complete the scheme as soon as possible after the Christmas break.
“The contractors will be doing some small areas of work in the run-up to Christmas but any works outside shop fronts will be restricted to early morning or evenings to prevent disruption in this busy period to either retailers or shoppers,” he added.
