Work started yesterday (Monday, August 9,) to install traffic signals at the junction of Ledbury Road and Folly Lane in Hereford.
Mount Crescent and Church Road will be closed to traffic altogether at the junction for about four weeks while the works are carried out.
The new lights are expected to be in operation by the end of September and will greatly increase safety for pedestrians crossing the busy intersection.
The addition of lights will also benefit drivers who will now have safer “controlled” passage through the junction under green lights.
Drivers turning into and out of the side roads will no longer be faced with anxious delays trying to find suitable gaps in the traffic along Ledbury Road, a main route into the City.
Cllr Mike Wilson, Cabinet Member (Highways & Transportation) said: “The Council is committed to improving pedestrian facilities.
“This junction has long been a problem for pedestrians, who have no specific crossing facilities in this section of Ledbury Road.
“Many children and young people need to cross here on their way to the local schools and colleges. This scheme will be of great help to them.”
During the seven-week construction period, temporary traffic controls will be in place in Ledbury Road and Folly Lane.
The scheme is being done now during the summer months to minimise the disruption but motorists are asked to be patient as delays are likely.
As part of the scheme, Mount Crescent will become “entry only” on to Ledbury Road at this junction but two-way access will remain available via Seaton Avenue.
During the works highway maintenance will be done around the junction and street lighting improved.
