The future of Hereford’s popular May Fair has been secured after a seven-year contract has been signed with the Showman’s guild of Great Britain.
Hereford’s City centre echoes to all the fun of the fair when the rides take over for three days every May.
The signing of the contract between Herefordshire Council and the guild signals the ongoing success of the Fair which began when King Henry I granted a Royal Charter to the Bishop of Hereford in 1121.
“We’re delighted that the Guild has decided to sign up for the next seven years,”
said Jeff Owen, Herefordshire Council’s Markets’ Manager.
The signing comes just months after an extensive consultation exercise revealed that the majority of the city’s traders think the Fair is good for Hereford.
“We know there have been those who have criticised the Fair taking over the centre of the City, but the majority of traders (both in the city and further afield) say the city benefits because of the Fair,” added Jeff.
The recent survey resulted in more than 1,800 responses with 73.5% of people in favour of the Fair continuing in its current location.
Mike Boswell, Chairman of the Showmans Guild of Great Britain (South Wales and N. Ireland Branch), said: “On behalf of The Showmen's Guild South Wales and Northern Ireland Section, I would like to say how proud we are to present a fair in the beautiful town
of Hereford.
“We are delighted to have signed the contract for another seven years and would like to thank all the people who have supported us in the past and we hope that this support will continue.
“I am most grateful to Herefordshire Council for all their help and support in making this happen.”
