Stepping up the Chlamydia campaign this Halloween

21 October 2009

Young people getting tested for chlamydia will have a special treat in store this Halloween as NHS Herefordshire plans to offer a ‘glo in the dark’ condom to all those who’s test is accepted.

NHS Hereford will be offering free screening at Hereford’s Maylord Orchard shopping centre from 1-5pm on Saturday October 31 and taking the screening into Play nightclub in the evening.

Those who complete the simple test, which involves peeing in a pot, will be offered a glow in the dark condom along with the durex condoms and lube usually issued with every accepted Chlamydia test.

Dr Arif Mahmood, NHS Herefordshire, said  “It’s a bit of fun and a novel way of encouraging young people to get tested and look after their sexual health.

“Chlamydia itself is no fun: it’s the most common form of sexually transmitted infection and is the main widespread cause of treatable infertility.  The problem is that it often has no symptoms which is why many young people don’t realise they are at risk.”

The glo in the dark condom is kite marked so it’s safe to use and the screening team will be around to help people access advice and guidance on sexual health issues.
