Council seeks views on new cycle route

05 October 2009

Herefordshire Council is seeking the views of county residents and businesses on plans to create a new cycle route between Moreton-on-Lugg and Hereford.

The aim of the new cycle route would be to encourage more commuter cycling by providing a safer route from the village to the city and also allow more people from the north of the city to cycle into the city of Hereford for shopping and leisure activities.

Residents and businesses in the area of the proposed route, which follows the C1127 and existing bridleways, are to receive a leaflet detailing the proposals together with a questionnaire which seeks their views on the route.

As well as this, anyone interested or concerned about the proposed cycle route is invited to attend two open days being held this month. The first is to be run from 2pm to 8pm at Moreton-on-Lugg village hall on Tuesday, October 20. The second one is at The Royal National College for the Blind, Point4, on Wednesday, October 21, between noon and 8pm.

Visitors to the open days will be able to discuss the proposals with staff from Herefordshire Council as well as engineers from the council’s contractor Amey.

Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “Our overarching aim is to increase the number of journeys made in the county through sustainable means such as cycling, car sharing and walking.

“To achieve this, we need to provide high quality cycles routes so people can leave their cars at home and enjoy the benefits of cycling which not only keeps you fitter but can save the cost of road tax and ever-increasing fuel bills.

“We have stated our preferred route which is the most direct one, but we would like local residents and businesses to let us know what they think before we start to build up detailed plans,” he added.
