Herefordshire Council, through its service delivery partner Amey Herefordshire, has installed temporary rubber kerbs to help deal with traffic problems in Grove Road, Hereford.
The kerbs, which form a ‘build-out’ reduce the width of the road so drivers have to slow down to drive through them and larger vehicles are discouraged from using this road, thereby supporting the existing weight limit. The kerbs were installed after residents advised the council’s highways service of the amount of damage unsuitable vehicles were causing to cars parked in the street.
Tim Ford, a resident from Grove Road, said: “Following installation last week, these build-outs appear to have been very successful. The overall amount of traffic turning into Grove Road from Green Street has reduced dramatically and its seems to have not only deterred cars but lorries as well.”
Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “I am pleased this scheme seems to be having the desired effect of reducing the amount of vehicles going down Grove Road.
“The build-outs are sufficiently prominent to discourage unsuitable traffic without causing undue detriment to the look of the area, and, as temporary structures, they are quick and easy to install, reposition or remove,” he added.
“We will, of course, monitor their success over a period of time to make sure residents remain happy with the results. If successful we will be able to consider more permanent features at this site, along with the use of this solution at other locations throughout the county,” he added.
