Access to all shops will be monitored throughout the works, due to start on September 7. They demonstrate the council’s continued commitment to invest in improving the city centre. They follow on from the completion of the maintenance works on Commercial Street and will take place before major refurbishment works on Widemarsh Street which are scheduled to start in January 2010.
Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “Regular users of the street will be aware of the poor condition of the road surface and problems with drainage. To address these issues we intend to carry out a maintenance scheme along Bewell Street (from its junction with Widemarsh Street to the Bowling Green Public House).
“The works will comprise excavation of existing carriageway and footway areas, installation of new drainage, relaying of improved block paving setts and improved signing in place of existing road markings. It is also intended that this package of works will improve access to shops in this street.
“It is anticipated this work will both improve the condition of Bewell Street and will compliment the works to be undertaken next year on Widemarsh Street,” he added.
Work will start on Monday, September 7 and is expected to take around 10 to 12 weeks. Retailers, businesses and residents that may be affected will be liaised with closely in order to minimise any inconvenience these works may cause. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times to ensure access to shops and businesses but the road will be closed to vehicles.
