Herefordshire is bracing itself for blizzards as at least 10 centimetres of snow are forecast for the county this evening and overnight. The council’s gritting teams have been out over the weekend keeping priority routes free of ice. The council has 1,500 tonnes of rock salt in its depots but is anticipating further deliveries today.

Highway layout over the bridge

The initial highway layout over the bridge proposed in progress report 7 (issued April 2008) consisted of a 4.5m carriageway for single way traffic and traffic signals, a 1.7m footway and a 3.0 m footway (now without a dedicated cycleway), all within the width of the existing highway. Following discussions with representatives of Colwall Parish Council there was a request to consider an alternative layout with two vehicle lanes over the bridge.

Due to heavy snowfalls overnight and unsafe highway conditions for the refuse collection vehicles and crews, the council has had to cancel domestic refuse and trade waste collections today (Friday, 6th February).

Herefordshire Council reports that it has secured almost all A roads in the county after gritting teams worked first to treat roads with road salt in advance of this morning’s heavy and widespread snowfall, and then again with snowploughs throughout the early hours.

The council will continue to plough and treat the roads as necessary – particularly problem spots such as Fromes Hill on the A4103 Hereford to Worcester road. Gritting teams were pleased to receive a much-needed delivery of road salt this morning.

Herefordshire Council has had to postpone its full council meeting this morning as several councillors are struggling to get to Hereford from outlying areas of the county. An announcement on reconvening the meeting will be made soon.

Herefordshire Council’s gritting teams have been out gritting all main roads and secondary routes this morning and they are doing all they can to keep the county moving in today’s snowy conditions. Focus has also been placed on areas of steep gradients and those subjected to heavy snowfall but many side roads are potentially dangerous to drive down.

Due to the improvement in the weather today Herefordshire Council's refuse collection crews are working extended hours to pick up today's trade and domestic refuse and clear as much of  Tuesday's that was missed due to the icy conditions.
