Have your say about the St Owen Street area

18 November 2008

Public spaces charity 'Living Streets' has been commissioned by Herefordshire Council to carry out a series of community street audits in the St.Owen Street area of Hereford next week.

These street audits will give local residents, businesses and users of local facilities the opportunity to highlight concerns and issues facing pedestrians and cyclists in the area. This will lead to the development of ideas for future improvements as part of the council's on-going sustainable transport strategy.

Two informal consultative meetings are being held on Thursday, November 27 at 2pm and again at 7pm in St Peters Hall, St Peters Square, Hereford, to explain the project, find out the key issues, and sign up local volunteers for the walkabouts. More people are needed to take part in the street audits.

The audits will take place at various times on Friday, November 28 and Saturday, November 29.

"Community Street Audits are a great way for local people, whether residents, businesses, or street users, to look at their own area from the viewpoint of pedestrians and cyclists and to highlight areas where improvements could be made," said Sue Webber, the Audit Co-ordinator from Living Streets. "It only takes an hour or so to audit a route, but it's surprising just how much valuable information you can pick up in that time."

Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council's cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "We are really keen to involve volunteers from all sections of the community, so if you use the St. Owen Street area do get in touch and find out more about this exciting project. If you can spare an hour or two to walk the streets, it is a great chance to let the council know what you think about your local area, and to have a role in shaping plans for its future."
