NATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL WEEK

27 Herefordshire Primary Schools are taking part in Walk To School Week, the second such week to be held this year which will involve 5000 children.

Hereford’s St James CE Primary already has a well-established Walking Bus to school every morning, and Orleton and Walford Primary Schools intend to use the week to enlist support for the launch of their own Walking Bus.

Herefordshire Council is keen to promote alternative ways of getting to school other than by private car.

They support a new Government initiative to encourage all schools to develop Travel Plans by the year 2010.

Grants are available to schools for doing this – typically £10,000 for a secondary school and £5000 for a primary school.

Cllr Mike Wilson, (Cabinet Member, Highways and Transportation), said: “The main aim of a School Travel Plan is to limit the use of the private car and encourage safer, healthier ways for children to get to school – walking, cycling or using the bus.

“Herefordshire Council hopes that many more schools will develop their own Travel Plan during the coming school year.

“The benefits will be seen in reduced congestion around schools and healthier, fitter and more independent children,” he added.

A School Travel Adviser and a School Travel Support Worker have been appointed to work with Herefordshire schools to help them develop Travel Plans.

So far 19 schools have signed off Travel Plans and many of these are taking part in the Walk to School Week.
