As part of a National Campaign to “Kick Racism Out of Football,” Hereford United has chosen to be involved in the Week of Action which runs from October 14-26.
The National Campaign was launched on Monday this week, October 11, and for the last several years has involved activities which aim to educate people about racism and its impacts, not just in football but also in society.
The game against Woking this Saturday has been designated as a racism awareness match. At half time, boys and girls from several schools within Herefordshire will wear “Kick Racism Out of Football” T-Shirts whilst entertaining spectators with football skills led by Hereford United Football In the Community Coaches.
The children taking part in the 15-minute skills session have all earned their place on the pitch by entering a competition which asked them to draw a picture or write a letter/poem of condolence to the Beslan Community, which has been a target for some of the latest terrorist attacks.
Other pupils will be supporting the event by wearing “Kick Racism Out of Football” T-shirts and badges in order to get the message across.
“Clubs large and small around the UK are working together to help eliminate racism not only from football but also from society. Football definitely unites; racism and prejudice definitely divides,”
said Alexis Lunn, Herefordshire Council’s Women’s Football Coordinator.
“Fighting racism and prejudice in football is fighting racism and prejudice in society,” she added.
