Do you know your rights as a Christmas shopper?

11 November 2008

Trainers, tracksuits, football kits and the latest fashions are often at the top of many Christmas wish lists, but do you know what your rights are if you have bought a gift and it is the wrong size, wrong style or the item is faulty? As part of National Consumer Week 2008 (November 17 to 22), Consumer Direct has teamed up with Herefordshire Council's trading standards department to help county residents become a savvy shopper this Christmas.

Mike Pigrem, Herefordshire Council's trading standards manager, says "Clothing and footwear can often be difficult to buy for other people so before you buy check the store's returns policy to avoid disappointment.

"High street and online traders will have a returns policy, but each can vary greatly. If you have bought an item as a gift and it is the wrong size, style or colour the store is not obliged to give you a refund.

"Ask for a gift receipt. In some cases this type of receipt allows the person who has received the gift a longer period of time to return an item but you will need to specify this at the till before you pay for the items.

"Gift vouchers and gift cards can be a popular choice for friends and family but make sure you know if there is a time limit by which the voucher has to be used.

"If an item is damaged or faulty it is important that you take it back to the store/trader as soon as possible - it is always important to check the items before you buy. Where this is not possible examine the goods as soon as you receive them, for example if you have bought items from a website. It is important you follow the right steps when returning faulty goods - all of which should be clearly explained on the trader's website," he added.
