HEREFORD CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

Hereford’s very own singing superstar, Lorna Dale, winner of the Maylords Pop Idol contest, will switch on this year’s Christmas lights accompanied by the Mayor of Hereford, Cllr Polly Andrews.

The event takes place on Wednesday, November 17, and the entertainment will start at 4.30pm with the switch-on itself due to take place at 7pm. City centre shops will remain open until 9pm.

The actual scale of the City Centre decorations will be reduced this year after some serious equipment failures in 2003/04 – mostly due to the storms which hit the City last winter.

After the lights were taken down, detailed examination of the installations by the Council’s lighting specialists revealed extensive deterioration of the fragile units.

Combined with increasingly stringent electrical safety regulations, the Council was faced with a potential repair bill of £30,000 to get everything working again for this year.

This exceptional level of repair has highlighted the need for a longer-term programme of renewal and maintenance for Hereford’s Christmas lights. Herefordshire Council is seeking ideas and support for additional funding from both the City Partnership and the City Council, which already contributes a significant amount towards the lights each year.

For this Christmas, Herefordshire Council is making the best of the lights that remain by concentrating the decorations in the City Centre area but omitting some of the adjacent streets. As usual, High Town is the focal point of the decorations, with lights also in Commercial Street, St Peter’s Square, Broad Street, Church Street and Bewell Street.

Unfortunately, there will not be the usual decorations in Commercial Road, St Owen’s Street, Eign Gate and Union Street. Of these, Eign Gate would have been difficult to light effectively this Christmas without hampering the preparatory works for the forthcoming major refurbishment scheme.

Cllr George Hyde, Cabinet Member (Economic Development, Markets and Property), said: “I recognise the value that local businesses attach to a high quality display of Christmas lights and very much hope to find a way of developing a long-term solution in conjunction with our other partners.

“For this year, we are making the best of what we have and will still be providing an extensive display throughout the core of the City Centre.”
