HEALTHY EATING FOCUS FOR SCHOOLS

Healthy eating in schools is a priority and James Farrell, is working with schools, catering contractors and the County Dietician to develop some tasty healthy eating options for county youngsters.

He acts as the link between the schools and contractor managing school catering contracts within Herefordshire.

This includes monitoring the nutritional standards in school food and ensuring compliance with government legislation which has been in force since April 2001.

“My objective is to get caterers to tackle Healthy eating, while respecting the pupils right to choose,” says James, Herefordshire Council’s Client Catering Officer.

Contractors are being encouraged to offer healthy food options and this is being put to practise at one Herefordshire School.

John Masefield High School now offers reduced salt and sugar in foods, has a salad bar, healthy sandwiches, fruit juices and non-carbonated drinks, and also a milk bar.

The menus also include the number of calories with each meal choice so pupils are aware of their calorie intake.

“This is an excellent example being set by the school, I am looking forward to extending this pilot scheme throughout Herefordshire schools,” he added

James is hoping that these types of healthy options will be available in the future to all Schools in the County.
