An order designating areas of Kington as alcohol-free was made permanent by Herefordshire Council's regulatory committee at their meeting on Tuesday, November 4.
The Herefordshire (Alcohol Consumption in Designated Places) order in came into force in Kington on September 14, 2007, and the committee met to review the order.
The order gives powers to local authorities to place restrictions on public drinking in places associated with nuisance or annoyance to the public. The police, including community support officers, have the power to require a person not to drink alcohol in places covered by such orders and they can be asked to surrender any alcohol. Failure to do so can result in arrest.
Under the review, Kington Town Council and West Mercia Constabulary were contacted by letter as well as all licensed premises who may be affected by the order.
Kington Town Council supported the order and asked for it to be made permanent.
West Mercia Constabulary also requested the order remain in force but felt there was no need to extend the designated area.
