GREEN FLAGS FLY AT HEREFORDSHIRE SCHOOLS

Green flags are flying at several Herefordshire schools as the autumn term starts.

A number of schools in the county were very busy in the summer term working towards their Eco Schools Green Flag Assessments.

The schools that achieved Green Flag status last term are: Broadlands Primary, Garway Primary, Peterchurch Primary, and Staunton on Wye. This term Burley Gate have just achieved their Green Flag.

In addition Aylestone High is the first school in the county to get a second Green Flag (the award has to be renewed every 2 years)

The achievement of these schools was celebrated at an event at Broadlands School last week, inviting all schools to come and see what it’s all about.

Eco Schools is a great way to make sustainable development a part of the life and ethos of a school.

Designed to fit in to the curriculum, it's an award scheme that gets everyone in the school community involved in making the school and global environment better.

An Eco Committee is set up which leads work on the 7 topics of: energy, waste, litter, school grounds, healthy living, transport and water.

Becoming an Eco school is rewarding, fun and leads to an award recognised throughout Europe.

The event also saw the launch of Ewise, a new piece of software, which allows children to investigate energy efficiency. It was developed jointly by Herefordshire Council, MVM software and npower, and was demonstrated by members of Broadlands Eco Committee.
