Further work to investigate archaeological remains at Masters House

29 October 2008

Herefordshire Council is to carry out further investigations into archaeological remains found at the Masters House, Ledbury.

The work, which will start in January 2009 and should be completed within the month, will be carried out within the scope of the community archaeological project being carried out in Ledbury.

Councillor Adrian Blackshaw, Herefordshire Council's cabinet member for economic development and community services, said: "Initial work at the proposed site for the town's new library has unearthed the foundations of a medieval structure and the county archaeologist has advised us that these need further investigation.

"It is important we carry out this extra investigative work so it can be properly recorded and to ensure the proposed design of the library will be sympathetic to the history of the area.

"We have decided to carry out the work in January to reduce the impact on car parking and local businesses during the run-up to Christmas.

"It is also important for us to develop good links with the community and the project in January will help achieve this aim by involving volunteers. There will also be a new viewing platform to enable members of the public to view work in progress," he added.

During the works, some car parking spaces will be lost in St Katherine's car park and negotiations are under way to provide alternative parking provision during the month of January.
