Hereford’s shoppers are to be given the chance to have their say on ambitious plans for a major revamp of the City’s Eign Gate.
The proposals, which include new paving, new street furniture, the creation of two café-style plazas and soft lighting, would boost the city centre and rejuvenate the area.
Traders in Eign Gate have been invited to have their say on the proposals to breath new life into the area, now shoppers and passers-by are being invited to pop into All Saint’s Church where they can view the proposals in detail.
“These proposals have the potential to transform Eign Gate into a showcase area of the city centre,”
said Cllr George Hyde, Cabinet Member (Economic Development, Markets and Property).
“We’re hoping that the transformation of the area will become a blueprint which will set the course for the rest of the city centre development to follow,” he added.
Luke Conod, Chairman of the Eign Gate Traders’ Association, said: “We’re delighted with the proposals and look forward to seeing in detail what they entail.
“Hereford is a beautiful city and something like this can only enhance its reputation and draw in more visitors and shoppers. We’re 100% behind the improvements.”
Work on the scheme, costing around half a million pounds, is due to begin in Spring next year and is likely to last around six months.
The work is likely to take this long as it is believed the underground pipework is in a very poor condition and much of it will have to be replaced.
Cllr Mike Wilson, Cabinet Member (Highways and Transportation), said: “We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this work will cause, but we believe it will be worth the wait and trust the area will become an attractive and vibrant part of the city centre.”
It will also mean that the trees currently in Eign Gate will have to come down – they were planted around 20 years ago and are not suitable for town centres. Their roots are damaging the brick planters and pushing up the current flooring.
Leaves are also blocking the views of the CCTV cameras in the area.
However, the Council understands that some of the trees along Eign Gate may have been either donated or gifted to the City around 20 years ago.
