BLOOMING GOLD FOR HEREFORDSHIRE

Herefordshire’s haul of top honours in this year’s Britain in Bloom competition has attracted much media attention.

The three gold, two silver and five addition awards will do much to attract visitors and tourists to the area.

But thanks must go to everyone who worked in all weathers to ensure the County looked its best when the judges inspected, says Herefordshire Council Leader Cllr Roger Phillips.

“We’re aware of the importance these awards mean to the County and what it means to our communities which have pulled together to make this happen,” he said.

“But I’d personally like to thank all those who did painting and pruning, and who planted around 120,000 plants to make the County look its blooming best.

“The Council’s Parks & Countryside Service co-ordinated all the entries for the competition in liaison with various In Bloom committees.

“And once the programme was developed, the operational aspects were handed over to Herefordshire Jarvis Services to coordinate and carry out all the work.

“Besides staffing, they store and distribute and landscape approximately 120,000 plants, coordinating work across five market towns. This has been a marvellous achievement on their behalf,” he added.

Entries are judged not only on their design, but also in the community effort involved in putting the entries together.

“We’re very proud of the contribution of everyone who put together the entries this year. The effort is a credit to the county and shows a true community spirit.”

The awards recognise local people and communities that are working together to make their village, town or city a better place to live, work and visit.

Judges look for how local authorities, businesses, local groups, schools and residents work together to achieve an attractive, environmentally friendly area.

The level of community spirit is a major factor in whether an entry receives a low or high award.

Mike Williams, Project Director, Herefordshire Jarvis Services, said: “I am absolutely delighted with this year's results and just how much effort was put in by everyone involved.

“Herefordshire Jarvis Services along with Council Officers were involved in Hereford, Ledbury, Bromyard, Ross-on-Wye and Leominster.

“The team spirit built up with local people and communities was fundamental to the successes achieved.

“These results can only be good news for Herefordshire and all involved should feel justly proud of their achievements.

“A special thanks goes to the Grounds Maintenance and Street Cleansing teams.”
