GEM of a day for Herefordshire Council staff

27 October 2008

Herefordshire Council staff enjoyed a GEM of a day to mark Good Environmental Management Day.

A series of events were arranged at the council's Plough Lane offices, starting with a free healthy breakfast for anyone who travelled to work in a sustainable way such as by walking, cycling, using public transport or car sharing.

Throughout the day there were a series of talks on biodiversity, climate change and carbon footprinting, eco-schools, energy efficiency, fair trade, recycling and waste, and sustainable supplies.

Dr Bike also attended between 10am and 4pm so staff could make sure their bikes are properly serviced in time for the darker nights.

Sadie Reade, Herefordshire Council's sustainability officer, said: "We held this day as a follow-up to comments made in a recent staff opinion survey.

"Staff wanted to know more about the issues involved and this fun day, with leaflets, freebies and a quiz with prizes, also addressed the serious issue of how we can all limit our impact on the environment and live more sustainably," she added.
