Village stalwart wins Pride of Herefordshire title

20 October 2008

Dorstone stalwart Elizabeth Francis was named overall winner at the second Pride of Herefordshire awards, run by the Herefordshire Partnership in conjunction with the Hereford Journal.

Elizabeth, 79, had earlier been named winner of the Herefordshire Adult Community Award.

Fellow villager Elizabeth Lane, who nominated her for the awards, said the former postmistress is also key holder for the parish church and village hall and, as such, is often approached for information by tourists researching family trees.

She said: "Elizabeth is very knowledgeable on families who have lived in the area."

Elizabeth also sits on the village hall management committee and her home is virtually an open house where she's always ready to entertain with cups of tea and her renowned home-made scones.

Elizabeth Lane added: "Nothing is too much trouble for her and I often wonder how Dorstone would cope without her."

On receiving the overall award from last year's winner Katie Llewellin and Jonathan Bretherton, chief executive of ESG who sponsored the award, Elizabeth Francis said: " I am just overwhelmed by it al and can't believe I won.

"I have never been to an event like this before and I felt there were plenty of people who deserved it more than me," she added.

The guest speaker was Graham Turner, chairman and manager of Hereford United.

Other winners were:

Entrepreneur award, sponsored by Express Bathrooms: Lee Oldaker of Cemelot Close, Hereford, for setting up his own successful security company.
