Herefordshire Council is cutting the cost for motorists by using a new material for gritting the county's roads.
Safecote, a proprietary coating to salt, has been successfully trialled at the Bromyard depot for a number of seasons and this year its use will be rolled out to the whole of the county.
Clive Hall, Herefordshire Council's network manager, said: "This material has many advantages in that not as much material is needed and as a result has less impact on the environment.
"One of the major benefits, however, is that this material causes less corrosion to cars and this, we estimate, represents a saving of £340,000 in associated costs for the county's motorists over each winter.
"Using Safecote in Herefordshire will also cut the costs of winter maintenance because the tonnage used will be reduced by 28 per cent each winter.
"With less corrosion we also hope extend the working life of the council's gritters from eight to 10 years and we estimate that using Safecote instead of our traditional salt will save us £46,500 each year, on a like for like comparison, from our winter maintenance spend," he added.
