Councils talk rubbish at food festival

10 October 2008

Worcestershire County Council's Waste Challenge Team will be offering hints and tips on what to do with the leftovers from the home dinner table at this year's Flavours of Herefordshire Food Festival.

The team, which also covers Herefordshire, will be on hand to advise festival-goers on the best way to dispose of waste food without sending it to landfill. The event will take place at Hereford Racecourse on Saturday and Sunday, October 25 and 26.

It's estimated that a third of all food we buy is thrown away and the Waste Challenge Team are hoping to educate those who aren't aware of the impact this is having on the environment.

Staff from both authorities will join volunteers from Herefordshire to advise people about what they can do about their food waste. They will give advice on portion control, food storage and how to make tasty dishes out of food leftovers.

Then for what's leftover, like banana skins and teabags, there will be advice on composting and the use of food waste disposers as a way of helping to divert food waste away from landfill.

Councillor John Jarvis Herefordshire Council's cabinet member for the environment and strategic housing said: "Food waste consists of a variety of things including fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags, bones, food that has become too old to eat, and food leftovers that could have been eaten. Hopefully, people will continue to recycle as much of their waste as possible and we hope that more people than ever will drop by for advice at our stand in the 'Something of a Buzz' area at the festival."

The team will be on hand to offer live demonstrations of food waste disposers, and staff will be handing out claim forms for the council's highly successful Sink Your Waste campaign, to enable more people to claim cashback against the cost of installing a food waste disposer in their home.

Anyone living in Herefordshire or Worcestershire is entitled to claim Cashback for fitting one. For example, if someone spent £100 on a food waste disposer, they could claim £50 cashback, making the unit highly affordable.

Residents can find information about 'Sink Your Waste' cashback and other waste prevention initiatives on http://www.wastemissionimpossible.org.uk/ or by telephone on 01905 766883.
