Motorists warned to take care when driving in winter

As the nights start to draw in and with the winter weather on its way, Herefordshire Council is urging all motorists to take extra care.

Figures in the county reveal there is an increase in accidents on the county's roads after the clocks go back and especially when ice or snow occurs and overall temperatures reduce.

Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council's cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "Motorists need to be aware that while we grit the county's roads to prevent ice from forming, it will not prevent them from suffering reduced levels of grip due to lower ambient temperatures combined with wet/greasy conditions.

"This will have a significant effect on overall tyre grip and stopping distances at this time of year.

"Anyone driving in icy or snowy conditions is urged to lower their speed and allow longer for their journeys. People should also plan their routes so they go along the county's roads which have been gritted.

"Flooding may also be a problem in the winter and motorists are urged never to drive through floodwater because they don't know how deep it is or whether there are any hidden dangers lurking underneath.

"Driving fast through standing water can also result in a hefty fine and between three and nine penalty points if police believe someone was driving without reasonable consideration to other road users," he added.

Motorists should also make sure their cars are in top shape for the winter and look at:

1. Batteries: Lights, heaters and windscreens out high demands on car batteries and it is a good idea to get them checked now and replaced if necessary. Drivers should also avoid running car electrics longer than necessary.
2. Antifreeze: Make sure antifreeze levels are topped up. Antifreeze costs only a few pounds, but a cracked engine block will cost hundreds of pounds to repair.
3. Windscreens: Dazzle from low sun during winter months can be a problem for drivers and they should improve their vision by making sure the windscreen is clean inside and out. Air conditioning should be used for faster demisting. Keep the windscreen and other windows clear because you could be fined if your vision is obscured through dirt or snow. Number plates must also be clearly visible.
4. Headlights: Headlights must be used when visibility is reduced and motorists should make sure all bulbs are working and the lights are clean and aimed correctly.
5. Tyres: Check all of your car tyres for condition, pressure and tread depth. At least 3mm of tread is recommended for winter motoring, and certainly no less than 2mm.
