The countdown is on for South Wye teenagers who will be the first in the county to study for the government's new diploma qualification in Business Administration and Finance from September 2009.
Herefordshire Council, in association with The Hereford Academy (formerly known as Wyebridge Sports College), Herefordshire College of Technology, Herefordshire Group Training Association and Riverside Training and other partners, have been given the green light to deliver the new qualification from September 2009.
"Diplomas are exciting and innovative new qualifications for 14-19 year olds," said Polly Garnett, Herefordshire Council's 14-19 strategy manager.
"They've been created to provide a real alternative to more traditional education routes and qualifications and are the most important changes to the county's education system since the introduction of GCSEs," she continued.
Diplomas will give young people fully rounded qualifications, which combine theoretical and practical learning, including the practical application of English, mathematics and ICT. This will equip them with the skills, knowledge and understanding they need for further or higher education and long-term employability.
The Business Administration and Finance Diploma, which will be available to the county's learners at foundation, higher and advanced level, combines opportunities for learning in the classroom alongside learning in real business environments and provides an exciting opportunity for schools, colleges and businesses to work collaboratively across the county.
Sarah Williams, head of vocational education at The Hereford Academy, said: "I'm really excited about this course and the opportunities it will give to the young people of Herefordshire. It will allow to them to gain practical experience in the workplace alongside the theoretical knowledge they will need to progress in their chosen career."
