Rock and hip hop gig celebrates the opening of skate park

27 August 2008

Young people in Ross on Wye will be celebrating the official opening of the town's skate park at a rock and hip hop gig next month.

The official opening will take place on Saturday 6th September during an afternoon of music showcasing the best of young and local musical talent and a major skate competition hosted by pro skaters Tribe.

The event will begin at 12pm with the official opening at 12.30pm featuring a display by professional skaters, Tribe, before the start of competitions for skateboarders, BMX and bladers. Participants will compete within their own age group and the competition is open to anyone from 10 to 25 years of age, and prizes from Flipped Street Sport Outlet will be up for grabs. Registration for the competition starts at 11am.

An eclectic mix of rock, hip-hop and acoustic music will be headlined by Rupert and the Robbers, upcoming Herefordshire band, already receiving rave reviews in the music press. It will also feature Ross-based young rock bands and see the return of a great hip hop and rap line up hosted by Soul Syndicate Sound System.

The skate park has been open for around 12 months and is funded by Barclays Spaces for Sports fund. It is thanks to this fund that further cash has become available to hold a big competition and make sure the facility is officially opened in style.

Music sessions have been organised with support from the Basement Youth Trust, the Courtyard, New Roots, the Music Pool and Herefordshire Council.

Councillor Jenny Hyde, cabinet member for children's services, said: "I am delighted that this fantastic facility is to receive such an exciting official opening.

"I would like to thank the many people and organisations who have worked hard to provide this skate park for the town's young people."
