Eight Herefordshire mums have successfully completed a seven week course and gained new skills that they can use to help their children develop speech and language.
The "Let's Talk" course organised run by local speech and language therapists and staff from Herefordshire Council's Widemarsh Children's Centre, aims to help parents and speech and language therapists share the same information and promote the communication skills of young children.
This is the first time such a course has been run in the county.
The seven practical sessions ran on a weekly basis and included
information about normal speech and language development, ideas
about how to help children listen, understand and talk, knowledge
about the communication difficulties children can experience and
the opportunity to meet other parents and carers.
An illustrated book of practical tips and ideas accompanied the
course.
The mums will be awarded their certificates of accreditation, together with a poetry and rhyme bag for them to share with their children at Trinity Church Hall in Whitecross, Hereford at 1pm on Wednesday September 3.
Councillor Jenny Hyde, cabinet member for children's services, said: "We understand that parents want the best for their children and by learning how speech and language develops in an accredited course, these mums will be extremely well equipped to give their children a head start.
"I am delighted to hear that every one of them has passed the course, and that more courses are planned for the future. Speech and language forms the basis of learning, so support provided to children during the developmental years provides benefits in future years."
