Herefordshire Council is advising motorists that the Old Wye Bridge, Hereford, will be closed to traffic from Sunday, September 14 for eight days to allow essential road repairs to be carried out.
The Old Wye Bridge is a scheduled ancient monument and, as such, the works needed to gain scheduled monument consent from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, who in turn gain advice from English Heritage.
Work will be carried out under the guidance of county archaeologist Dr Keith Ray and hand-held tools will be used to prevent any damage to the bridge, following removal of the road surface.
The works, to be carried out by Herefordshire Council’s highways service in partnership with Amey Wye Valley Limited, are aimed at improving the surface of the road and preventing water from getting into the bridge and damaging it.
Pedestrian access will be maintained over the bridge and consultation will take place with local businesses and other stakeholders to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.
Herefordshire Council wishes to apologise for any inconvenience caused.
