An ambitious programme to revitalise Hereford’s Buttermarket has begun under the leadership of Cllr Adrian Blackshaw, the council’s cabinet member for economic development and community services.
The regeneration of the Buttermarket has been identified as one of the priority actions in the Hereford City Regeneration Strategy, about to be published, which is a by-product of considerable public consultation.
As a result, Cllr Blackshaw has confirmed that the Buttermarket will be redeveloped and has now brought together a steering group and a project team to push the refurbishment forward.
“The Buttermarket is the jewel in the crown of High Town and we have a responsibility to ensure it continues to play a key role in attracting visitors and shoppers both now and in the future,” said Cllr Blackshaw.
“We can’t say what the future holds for the Buttermarket at the moment. This will be determined through extensive dialogue with Buttermarket traders in addition to consultation with the public and detailed market research.
“We have already begun this process with a detailed site visit to the Buttermarket and we also intend to involve experts such as senior officers from the National Association of British Markets Authority,” he added.
Cllr Blackshaw has given an undertaking to Buttermarket tenants that they will be kept informed on progress and will also have a key role to play in the project.
