Works at head of Falling Shaft looking good

04 August 2008

Another vital part of the Ross Flood Alleviation Scheme is now in place as the new Falling Shaft and weir structure that diverts excess water away from Ross town nears completion.

This Falling Shaft in Kings Acre car park is a 6m diameter circular weir within a 10.3m diameter outer chamber and has been constructed to a depth of more than 12m .

When the excess flows in the adjacent Chatterley and Rudhall brooks build up to the level of the top of the weir, water entering the chamber will start to flow over the weir and fill up the tunnel being constructed below.

Once full, water will pass through the tunnel to emerge over a weir to be constructed beside the Rudhall Brook opposite the end of the Rope Walk.
The tunnelling machine has a further 130m to travel before breaking through into the bottom of the Falling Shaft.

Once the tunnelling machine is lifted out, the shaft will be capped and the car park above it will be reinstated.
