Three new firms sign up to Rotherwas Travel Plan

30 July 2008

Three new firms at Hereford’s Rotherwas Industrial Estate – Folbigg Fabricators, Contrapak and Country Style Cookers – are putting the environment first when travelling to work by signing up to the Rotherwas Travel Plan.

These latest additions mean 49 of the 137 firms have signed up to the Rotherwas Travel Plan which represents more than 1,000 staff and 50 per cent of the workforce.

Folbigg Fabricators, a welding and fabricating company, has been based at Rotherwas for more than 10 years.

Sue Hunt, company secretary, said: “We noticed a lot of promotional activity about Bike Week and decided to join up.

“One of our employees, Kieron Jones, from Putson already cycles to work and we are trying to encourage more to follow his example as well as sharing our car journeys,” she added.

Tricia Wright, finance manager at Contrapak, which manufactures packaging for non-food items such as horticultural products, also cycles to work from Westfields.

Kirsty Smith from Contrapak said: “As a company, we try and do out bit for the environment and, with the rising cost of fuel as well, we are also encouraging our suppliers to have their products taken to a central distribution point so journeys can be shortened.

“I am also hoping to start cycling into work to not only save money but improve my fitness levels as well,” she added.

Country Style Cookers, which reconditions Agas and Rayburns, has taken the popular twoshare concept and extended it to “threeshare”.

Leon Holland, sales manager, explained: “Three of my staff live in Bromyard and rather then all of them taking a van to and from home each day they now travel together, greatly reducing our fuel costs and, with less journeys made, also helping the environment.”

Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “I am delighted these three firms have signed up to the travel plan and hope many more will follow suit. The new relief road is making access much easier for businesses at Rotherwas and any further measures to reduce the amount of traffic in the area are welcomed.”
