Following the news today (Monday 28 July 2008) that both Hereford and Worcester feature in the preferred option for two radiotherapy units to be established, there have been reactions from local leaders in health and social care.
Herefordshire Council leader Councillor Roger Phillips expressed his delight at the news that Hereford will have its own life-saving radiotherapy centre.
“I pay tribute to the tireless work of campaigners and healthcare professionals who have lobbied hard for Herefordshire to have a local centre for cancer treatment - and I thank councillors too, especially those involved with our health scrutiny committee, who have been vocal in their support for the campaign.
“I would also highlight the commitment of the Hereford Times in fighting the case for our community, particularly health correspondent Liz Watkins who has so clearly and cogently outlined what has been a very strong case for Herefordshire. I was also struck by the fact that news editor Ian Morris actually handed out copies of last week’s Hereford Times with its message to experts attending the Three Counties Cancer Network board meeting last week. The Hereford Times has demonstrated again its intuitive grasp of the issues most important to Herefordshire people”.
