Summer fun at Ross-on-Wye’s Ryefield Children’s Centre

25 July 2008

Mondays are set to be fun-days at Ross-on-Wye’s Ryefield Children’s Centre with a handful of action-packed activity days planned throughout July and August.

The family days are being staged to mark the relaunch of weekly support and guidance drop-in sessions for local families on Tuesday mornings.

The drop-in sessions provide information and support on practical matters such as training, employment, housing benefits and budgeting to local families.

The Ryefield Ross Children’s Centre is running them in partnership with the Extended Schools programme.

“As well as the important support on offer, the days aim to be fun and educational for the children by providing activities which engage both parent and child together,” said Carole Harris, Children’s Centre Manager for Ross-on-Wye and the Golden Valley.

While the first session took place on Monday this week, the second Family Day takes place on Monday, July 28, and has an Italian theme which will promote adult learning
along with healthy eating and eating on a budget.

Home Start will be making some healthy homemade pizzas with families which will then be available for everyone to eat,” said Carole.

Visitors will be able to brush up on their Italian football skills and there will be face painting and a big film will also be on offer.

A storytime session will be held by the library within the Children’s Centre. Visitors are also invited to make giant Italian themed sculptures in the garden.

On Monday, August 11, a jobs fair and practical advice day will be held at the centre.

Families will be able to learn circus skills, entertainment will be provided by the Green Tomatoes theatre group, visitors will be able to try their hand at biscuit decorating and the centre will have a huge resource of practical advice and support opportunities for local families covering jobs, training, housing, benefits, finances and much more.

The final family day, which takes place on Monday, August 18, is called a pure indulgence day.

This will celebrate the previous family days and include a real beach created in the centre’s garden, donkey rides, mural painting, a free barbecue, beauty treatments, soft play area and library story time.
