At a packed meeting of Herefordshire councillors, parish council chairmen and parish clerks, last Wednesday, Post Office Limited and the Government came under fire for closing rural post offices despite a huge number of protests from communities across the nation.
Councillor Adrian Blackshaw, who chaired the seminar, said that it was expected that about 15 of the 87 post offices in the county would close, adversely affecting many rural communities that depended on their post office and village shop.
Speaking at the seminar, Post Office Limited said that they were closing 2,500 post offices nationally to save money.
Ken Parsons, speaking for the Rural Shops Alliance, gave advice to communities on how they may fight the closures though he warned that the Government were determined to close 2,500 post offices and only the most robust arguments would succeed in changing the minds of the Post Office.
The complete list of post offices to close in Herefordshire will be published on August 27 and this will be followed by a six-week consultation period in which everyone will be encouraged to take part.
