Herefordshire Council short-listed for national building award

17 July 2008

Herefordshire Council has been short listed for a prestigious national award for its partnership work with county company Border Oak under the LABC Partner Authority Scheme.

The council has been short listed for the LABC National Built in Quality Awards in the category “Best Partnership with a designer, architect or construction consultant” for the partnership with Border Oak.

The national awards honours exceptional working partnerships across all building in the UK and are keenly contested between architects, construction consultants and designers as well as local authority building control departments.

Border Oak set up the partnership with Herefordshire Council Building Control a few years ago to streamline and support the specialist and innovative nature of their work that is spread across the UK.

Andrew Ashcroft, Herefordshire Council’s head of planning and transportation, said: “In an age when traditional building skills are disappearing, it is satisfying to see a company like Border Oak leading the field in a form of construction so deeply rooted in this country’s heritage, while at the same time pioneering the use of the latest innovations and technologies.

“We have worked closely with Border Oak for many years now on a wide and varied range of projects, and we believe that the relationship between our two organisations is a tremendous example of the LABC Partnership scheme working in the way it was always intended to for the benefit of our clients, for us and ultimately for the end users of the buildings.

“The LABC awards are most highly regarded as they reward those that achieve the very highest standards in building construction and I am delighted we have both been short listed for this award,” he added.

John Greene, managing director of Kingsland-based Border Oak said: “We needed to provide a reliable service for our clients to get the complex working drawings and technical construction details approved efficiently and professionally.

"Herefordshire Building Control not only understood the unique nature of our products but were happy to work with us on the bespoke projects that demand more detailed partnership collaboration - and of course we are great believers in using Herefordshire based services wherever possible," he added.

LABC is the trading name of the District Surveyors Association Limited and coordinates the technical application of building regulations so buildings are healthy, safe, sustainable and accessible for all users and tenants, whether domestic, commercial or public.

The LABC partnership between Herefordshire Council and Border Oak means the company only has to deal with one local authority over building regulations even though they build homes all over the country.

The awards are announced on October 16 in London.
