Talking rubbish pays off for Shobdon primary school

09 July 2008

Shobdon primary school has won a talking litter bin for “talking rubbish” in a county-wide audit carried out by Herefordshire Council.

Herefordshire Council asked all county primary schools to answer a series of questions about recycling and litter as well as seeking views on what can be done to deal with these issues.

23 out of 83 Herefordshire primary schools returned surveys making a 28% response rate.

The aim of the survey was to identify litter and recycling issues and offer recommendations on dealing with them, both on an educational and a practical level.

Herefordshire Council’s Streetscene has worked with The Helping Hand Company, based in Ledbury, in the past, and many schools have been given litter clean up kits and Streetscene signs for the playground.

As a reward for taking part in the survey, the Helping Hand Company donated an amazing talking litter bin. The penguin shaped bin has a number of comments to make when fed litter, and should encourage students to use it, keeping the school litter free.

The results from the survey will be analysed and action plans developed over the summer, and work with schools will begin again in the Autumn term.

Fiona Humm of The Helping Hand Company said: “I would like to thank all the schools who took part in the survey and congratulate Shobdon Primary School on winning the talking bin; we hope it will support the children’s enthusiasm to protect their environment, and have some fun whilst doing so.

“We offer litter picking equipment and environmental education resources especially aimed at appealing to children and any schools wanting more information are welcome to contact me on 01531 635678,” she added.
