Wigmore School’s a class act

07 July 2008

School pupils throughout the UK are to share the secrets of Wigmore School’s success as both the school and head teacher will become national leaders of education from 1st September.

The school became Herefordshire’s first ‘all through’ school in September 2007 with the merger of Wigmore Primary and Wigmore High School.  Following an outstanding Ofsted inspection of the high school this year, the new school has now been made a national support school and Andrew Shaw, the head teacher has been made a national leader of education.  This means the school and any of the staff within it can be called on by the government to support any organisation or school in the country in need of support.  The reasons for support vary but may be because a school is under-achieving or needs help in a particular curriculum area.

There are only around 140 of these national support schools in the whole country – schools needing support are referred to by the Department for Children, Skill and Families  and the National College for School Leadership.

Part of the role is to advise ministers in Westminster on future developments in education once a term, plus attend when invited on a number of subject-related issues.  Wigmore School can provide advice on behaviour management, pupil tracking, monitoring teaching and learning, change management and development planning amongst other things.

Head teacher, Andrew Shaw, said: “This is great news for the school and its staff.  Supporting other schools gives us the opportunity to develop personally and professionally as individuals but also bring some valuable comparative experiences back to Wigmore School.”
