First part-time speed limit opens

02 July 2008

Herefordshire Council’s first part-time 20mph speed limit outside the newly opened Sutton Primary School on the C1125 is now in operation.

Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: “I have now been to see the new part-time speed limit signs in operation for myself during school closing time and was glad to see motorists slowing down when the lights flashed.

“I am very keen on these new part-time speed limits because they not only ensure road safety for pupils at the school but also don’t cause too much inconvenience to motorists outside of school opening and closing times.

“I will be getting regular updates on how this part-time limit works to see if they will be suitable for other locations in the county as well,” he added.

Mr Peter Box, joint headteacher at Sutton Primary School, said: “Parents and pupils alike are delighted with the new speed limit which has really helped to slow traffic down when they go to and from school.”

The 20mph speed limit operates an hour before school opening time (8am until 9am) and for an hour at school closing time (2.30pm until 3.30pm).

At other times, when the amber lights are not flashing, a 30mph speed limit will be in operation.
