Kebab shop must close earlier

12 May 2008

Following complaints of crime and disorder, Herefordshire Council's regulatory sub-committee has reviewed the licence for Bromyard Kebab and Burger Shop in Cruxwell Street.

West Mercia Police sought the review after a number of complaints that the premises were operating outside their permitted hours which were midnight on Sunday to Thursday and 01.30am on Friday and Saturday.

The sub-committee was told at its meeting on Friday, May 9 that the premises was still serving at 02.10 on Sunday, March 9 and a violent fight took place inside.

The fight involved about 10 people. One male was knocked unconscious and a large window was smashed.

This incident is subject to an on-going police enquiry and has resulted in at least 12 people being arrested for offences of violent disorder or assault.

During this incident the staff and licence holder did not take any action to prevent or stop this fight and did not call the police or ambulance service.

Members of the regulatory sub-committee amended the kebab shop's opening hours and added further conditions.

The kebab shop can now only open until 00.30 on Friday and Saturday nights and must employ two SIA registered doorstaff from 23.00 until 00.30 on the same nights.

The new timings and conditions comes into effect at midnight on May 31 which allows the applicant 21 days to appeal against the decision.
