Learn to read old handwriting

09 May 2008

Herefordshire archive service is to help unlock many of the treasures stored in the Record Office in Harold Street.

As part of this year's Adult Learner's week, anyone exploring the history of their family, house or community will have the chance to learn how to read old documents.

A palaeography workshop will be held at the Museum Resource and Learning Centre, Friar Street Hereford HR4 8AS, on Thursday, May, 22, from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

The cost is £10 per person and booking is essential.

Senior archivist Rhys Griffith said: "Many people who are excited by archives can get put off by handwriting that's difficult to read.

"With a bit of practice, the most challenging scripts can be deciphered and this can open up a whole new world for users.

"It's like a puzzle, but with much more to it than 'Sudoku'," he added.

Anyone information about the event should telephone 01432 260750.
