First primary school gains Streetscene charter

29 April 2008

Lord Scudamore in Hereford has become the first primary school in the county to receive a Streetscene charter for its environmental work.

Certificates for both the infants and junior schools were presented at a school assembly to Eco-school co-ordinator Liz Orton.

The school already displays Streetscene signs in its playground and last summer pupils took part in a litter pick around the Sainsbury's store in Hereford, accompanied by ward councillors Dave Benjamin and Julie Woodward.

As an added incentive for the pupils to keep their school tidy, Herefordshire Council has now handed over a special bear litter bin and this will be placed in the playground with the message "Litter, we can't bear it".

Pupils were also all given a packet of special Streetscene chewing gum wrappers. The idea is the pupils carry these in their pockets to dispose of gum or sweets and then put them in a litter bin.

Lord Scudamore School is one of 50 primary schools in the county which have achieved Eco School status.

Streetscene is operated by Herefordshire Council in partnership with Amey Wye Valley and aims to keep the county clean through a range of initiatives such as a special hotline for reporting graffiti and vandalism.

John Bobin, Streetscene manager, said: "I am delighted Lord Scudamore Primary School has been awarded a Streetscene charter and would like to thank all of the children for their commitment to the environment.

"It is important children understand the need to keep the county clean and tidy and I hope they will now spread the message to their parents and other adults, " he added.
