Pupils do their bit for the environment

15 April 2008

Riverside School pupils showed their commitment to the environment by taking part in a litter pick along the Belmont Road up to the Tesco store at the Belmont roundabout.

Herefordshire Council ward members Councillor Phil Edwards and Councillor Glenda Powell together with parish councillors Wendy Butler and Ron Loft helped the pupils during the litter pick. Jackie Jones from SHARP (South Hereford Area Regeneration Project) and some parents also helped.

Councillor Phil Edwards said: "It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of the school children and by going home and telling their parents, it will help spread the word that we shouldn't drop litter.

"Belmont Road is an important gateway into the city and as such it is important we keep it as tidy as possible.

"Unfortunately, plastic bags are still the biggest problem and they are often difficult to collect because they get blown up high into trees.

"I would urge everyone shopping at Tesco to make sure their bags don't blow away or, better still, use one of the store's Bags for Life or take their own reusable shopping bags with them," he added.

Councillor Glenda Powell said she would like to thank the children of Aspen team for their enthusiasm and hard work on the day.

She said: "The look of joy on the faces of the children of what they had achieved was very rewarding. To encourage and educate our children on the importance of not to drop litter and to recycle where possible while enjoying what they are doing will give them a sense of pride in where they play and live."

The litter pick ended at the Tesco store where the children were rewarded with a free drink and cuddly toy, provided by the store.

Pupils then visited the Recycling Bus which hosts an exhibition about recycling and composting.

Master composters Paul Konig and Sarah Blenkisop were on hand to tell the youngsters all about the need to both reduce the amount of waste produced and recycle as much as they can. All of the children also received a free goodie bag.

John Bobin, Herefordshire Council's Streetscene manager, who met the litter pick party at Tesco, said: "I would like to thank Riverside School pupils and staff for taking part together with the local councillors. Events such as this show how anti-social it is to drop litter and that everyone can play their part in ensuring Herefordshire is a cleaner place to live in."
