Historic wall given facelift

10 March 2008

Visitors and residents in Ross-on-Wye will be able to enjoy a better view of a historic wall in the town thanks to work carried out by Herefordshire Council.

Overhanging ivy and small trees have been removed from the wall at the top of Wilton Road in Ross-on-Wye.

The work was carried out because vegetation was falling down onto the footway below and needed to be done in the interests of highway safety.

Council engineers will also now be able to inspect the condition of the wall, which was hidden from view by the vegetation.

Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council's cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "We took the decision to do this work in the interests of highway safety but it has also had the effect of greatly improving the visual appearance of the area.

"We have also been really pleased with the reaction of local people who have commented on how fantastic the wall now looks," he added.

The work was carried out by the council's highway maintenance contractor Amey, working from an access platform.
