People who are sprucing up their properties over the coming weeks with a spot of decorating and de-cluttering are being urged to remember to put their unwanted possessions to good use.
Laura Preece, Herefordshire Council's recycling officer, said: "Spring is often the time we choose to tidy and improve our homes, while organising our belongings. As part of our Steps to Sustainability campaign, we are encouraging people to remember to send their unwanted possessions for re-use while they de-clutter their home.
"In Herefordshire many voluntary and community organisations gladly take unwanted items that are still in good condition, such as furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles and paint. These items are then made available to other members of the community. Re-using valuable resources in this way can help to reduce waste and also support a host of good causes in the process," she added.
A leaflet containing details of the county's local re-use organisations is available from Herefordshire Council. Alternatively, residents can try offering their unwanted items on the internet by using the Freecycle website http://www.freecycle.org/
The 'Steps to Sustainability' simple guide, available in leaflet form from Info Shops and council offices from the end of January, illustrates what the council is committed to doing to promote sustainability (reducing waste is just one issue) and tackle climate change.
