This work, being funded from the council's Safer Routes to School budget, aims to increase road safety for all road users, especially children, and to encourage more pupils to walk and cycle to school.
The scheme involves installing a zebra crossing on both the northbound and southbound lanes of Aylestone Hill to provide controlled crossing points catering for the very heavy volume of pedestrian traffic going to schools and colleges in the area.
Local ward member Councillor Brian Wilcox, Herefordshire Council's cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "This area of Hereford is extremely busy because of the number of schools and colleges there.
"The staggered crossing means people have a means of getting to the other side of the road safely but without having to stop both lanes of traffic which would lead to further congestion," he added.
Works also include new road signs and road markings, local improvements to footways and new lengths of pedestrian guardrailing to help the crossings operate successfully.
The council's contractor Amey Wye Valley is responsible for work on site and it is expected to be complete early in April. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to road users with the majority of work taking place without needing traffic management.
