Public urged to have say on play area

27 February 2008

Herefordshire Council is urging residents in the Central Avenue of Hereford to make sure they have their say on how a play area is updated and improved.

A Section 106 agreement secured by the council includes money to be spent specifically on the Portfields open space play area, to be known in future as The Gravel Pit Park.

To ensure the play area is developed to meet the needs of residents, a public meeting is being held on Tuesday, March 18 at Hereford Fire Station, starting at 7.30pm.

Tony Featherstone, Herefordshire Council's parks, countryside and leisure development manager, said: "This play area is currently quite run down but the money we have secured from planning gains is to be spent directly on improving and updating the facilities there.

"Even though it is only a small area, it is a very important area of public open space and we would urge all residents to be fully involved in discussions about how it can be best developed to meet their needs," he added.

Resident Toni Cook, who is chairing the public meeting, said: "This is an opportunity for local residents, particularly those with children who would like to use the park, to express any interest in forming a group to raise funds and develop the park."

Anyone with a disability should telephone Toni Cook on 01432 360376, to arrange access to the meeting.
