Remember, remember to keep your dogs safe on Bonfire Night

02 November 2007

Herefordshire Council is urging all dog owners to take the stress out of November 5 for their pet dogs.

Traditionally, the council's dog wardens are busiest around Bonfire Night with dogs escaping from homes after being frightened by the noise of fireworks going off.

Last year, 14 dogs were found wandering the county's streets and had to be taken in by the dog wardens before being safely reunited with their owners.

Mike Higgins, Herefordshire Council's animal health and welfare manager, said: "To save distress to dogs, it is better they are kept indoors during the period when fireworks are going off and owners should also ensure all windows, doors and dog flaps are kept firmly shut."

The council is also reiterating its call for all dog owners to get their pets tagged or micro-chipped because then, if they do escape or get lost, they can be reunited more quickly with their owners.

An internet-based service to reunite dogs with their owners has also been set up on the council's website. Just click on the Stray Dogs link in the Spotlights box.

This service offers peace of mind to any owners who have lost their dogs outside normal working hours because any dogs featured on this site are being well cared for at the council's kennels.

Councillor John Jarvis, Herefordshire Council's cabinet member for the environment and strategic housing, said: "As a dog owner myself, I know the stress fireworks can cause to pets and, even if pets are kept inside, loud bangs can still be upsetting. When fireworks are going off, dog owners should draw the curtains and make sure their dog has a safe place to retreat to.

"Many people also walk their dogs in the evening but, at this time of year, fireworks could cause the pets to run off so it is far better if people can walk them during daylight hours and, if they are unable to do this themselves, perhaps a member of their family or a friend could help out.

"When fireworks are actually going off nearby, take the time to sit with your pets and reassure them and, if you are having your own Bonfire Night Party, make sure your dog is kept safely inside," Councillor Jarvis added.
