Events prove Big Draw during half-term holiday

29 October 2007

Herefordshire Heritage Services hosted a series of events during the October half-term (October 22 to October 26) as part of the national Big Draw campaign.

In Hereford, a drawing-themed treasure trove was held on Tuesday, October 23, in the Woolhope Room at Hereford Museum.

Youngsters were asked to draw one of the museum's treasures, which included a Persian dagger with a glass horse-head pommel, a rhino beetle, a mother of pearl decorative egg, a pair of silk baby's shoes and military buttons bearing dragon images, and had been specially selected for the event from the collections at the Museum Resource and Learning Centre in Friar Street.

Children then etched their drawings into special polystyrene printing tiles and inked them up to produce prints. The youngsters then added their prints to a special wall hanging, which will go on permanent display in the atrium of the new Museum Resource and Learning Centre in Friar Street.

At Ross-on-Wye Heritage Centre there was be a Bedecked and Bejewelled event on the same day, when boys and girls drew jewellery from Hereford Museum's handling collections and made some funky body ornaments from recycled materials.

Jewellery from Roman times to Victorian times featured at the Bedecked and Bejewelled event at Hereford Museum and Art Gallery on Wednesday, October 24 when youngsters had the opportunity to draw a range of jewellery and make some of their own.

Ledbury Heritage Centre hosted Bedecked and Bejewelled on Thursday, October 25 from 10am until 12.30pm when children drew and made jewellery.

Siriol Collins, Herefordshire Council's heritage learning officer, said: "We are delighted so many youngsters took part in the Big Draw which is a national campaign aimed at encouraging people to use drawing as a way to engage with the past, present and future.

"Our museums and heritage centres have a wealth of treasures for people to see and they all proved an inspiration to the youngsters in creating their own designs," she added.
